I produced this transit propensity analysis as a way of visualizing where the highest densities of "demand" for transit service in Anchorage should be, based on relevant demographics and trip generators.
I used data from the Census Bureau and the Municipality of Anchorage and processed the data in ArcGIS, then created the final maps in Adobe Illustrator. The multi-step process is outlined below.
The results of the analysis were integral to the a subsequent transit visioning process (Anchorage Talks Transit), which combined public and stakeholder priorities with demographics and system performance metrics to inform a complete redesign of Anchorage's transit network.
I weighted data after consulting with staff, external stakeholders, past plans, and origin-destination surveys.
Census Block-level scores were an interim output that showed which Census Blocks have the highest transit propensity according to our metrics and weighting. However, I had to further refine the results to emphasize density by accounting for distance decay.
This final map shows estimated densities of transit propensity throughout Anchorage.
