To better understand the different types of populations and jobs that would be within walking distance of proposed transit routes, I used the GIS Network Analyst tool to create pedestrian "walksheds" to visualize transit accessibility in various scenarios. I then used those walksheds to capture data from the American Community Survey (ACS) to estimate the number of residents and workers that would be affected.
The below maps highlights the ridership-focused concept, which was one of several network redesign scenarios that were considered. Under this concept, all transit resources would be focused on the densest corridors with the highest existing and potential transit ridership.
In addition, to ensure an equitable transit network as new routes were being considered, I used data from the American Community Survey and the Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD) datasets to identify Census block groups with high minority and poverty rates that closely followed Housing & Urban Development (HUD) guidelines.
The maps below highlight some of those analyses.
